Protecting the environment is everyone’s responsibility!!!!!!
Environmental Management is not, as the phrase could suggest, the management of the environment as such but more the management of man’s interaction with and impact upon the environment.
In today’s competitive market place, customers, the community, and regulatory bodies are increasingly demanding that organisations demonstrate a commitment to the environment, the prevention of pollution, and the promotion of environmental sustainability. To meet these requirements, more organisations are choosing to have their environmental management systems (EMS) certified to demonstrate their commitment to care of the environment.
We have no preconceived ideas on how you should apply environmental management to your business. It is your company, and you know the best way to apply the requirements of the appropriate standard. Our role is to assess whether your management system does in fact comply with the relevant standard regardless of how you have done it!
We also view support for your environmental initiatives as an important part of our activities, and therefore we look, not simply for compliance with the standard(s), but also for issues to bring to your attention in terms of how your management systems and operations could perhaps be improved. After all, when our certificate hangs in your reception area, we are entrusting our reputation into your hands!!!!
ISO 14001:2004 and ECO Warranty are internationally recognised environmental management certification standards.
Environmental management system certification basically requires the organisation to monitor and manage its impact on the environment. By controlling risks and creating improvements, not only will the organisation be protecting the environment but will also bring bottom line benefits to the performance of the company. By identifying operational inefficiencies organisations can reduce the environmental impact of their operation while reducing the costs of inefficient resource consumption.
There is also the added advantage that the standard requires the company to be aware of all the legislative requirements that are relevant to its operations and therefore the potential for legal non-compliances, and any subsequent court costs or fines, is likewise minimised.
An environmental management systems (EMS) compliant with the either ECO Warranty or ISO 14001:2004 usually consists of the following elements:
Environmental Policy – The organisation has established and maintained an environmental policy manifesting the organisations commitment to environmental protection.
Planning – The organisation identifies the environmental aspects of their operation as well as applicable environmental legislation and then sets out objectives, targets and programmes to manage these aspects.
Implementation & Operation – The organisation provides the required resources to achieve stated objectives, ensures that training and awareness is provided, and measures to communicate on environmental aspects throughout the organisation are established. Significant environmental aspects are addressed through appropriate control measures and emergency response plans.
Checking – The organisation monitors and measures their operations and activities with regards to their environmental impact. Legal compliance is constantly monitored and non-conformities are managed in a systematic manner. Internal audits ensure that the EMS conforms to the planned arrangements of environmental management.
Management Review – Management meetings are conducted regularly to review the suitability, adequacy and effectiveness of the EMS.
Taken together these aspects help the organisation to continually improve the EMS and thereby their ability to improve its environmental performance. It is important to note that this standard does not set any specific requirements for environmental performance. It rather sets out a framework for organisations to manage their environmental aspects in a systematic manner.

International Certifications offer the following environmental management certification programs:
ISO 14001:2004 – Environmental Management Systems – Requirements with guidance for use (www.iso.org)
ISO 14001:2004 is the world’s most recognised environmental management certification standard.
ISO 14001:2004 sets out the criteria for an environmental management system and can be certified to. It maps out a framework that a company or organization can follow to set up an effective environmental management system. It can be used by any organization regardless of its activity or sector.
Using ISO 14001:2004 can provide assurance to company management and employees as well as external stakeholders that environmental impact is being measured and improved.
It has proven benefits. A survey of over 5000 users showed:
- 75% of users found it valuable for meeting legal requirements and improving the organization’s environmental performance
- Over 60% rated it highly for achieving management committment and employee engagement
- Over half rated it as valuable for business management, most notably for meeting stakeholder requirements and improving public image
- Over 75% indicated that use of the standard gave them a competitive advantage and 63% gained a financial benefit
ECO Warranty:2010 – Environmental Management Systems – Requirements (www.WarrantyStandards.com)
Eco Warranty is a user friendly simple to use alternative to ISO 14001. While this standard addresses all requirements of an EMS compliant with ISO 14001, it is much easier to implement and maintain. Consequently implementation is usually less resource intensive and more cost effective. This makes Eco Warranty a perfect alternative for small to medium size organisations. However, all types of organisations can achieve certification to this standard from primary producers, packing sheds, transport companies, fruit and produce agents, manufacturing companies, civil engineering, construction, through to professional service providers and retailers.
Eco Warranty has some advantages over ISO 14001, these are:
- the certification is often more cost effective
- the certification logo can be used on products and packaging to demonstrate your commitment to the environment (this is not allowed with ISO 14001 certification)
- consumers are more likely to know what Eco Warranty is rather than ISO 14001
- the standard has been laid out in a simple user friendly format
- one of our auditors described it as “a very workable, easy-to-understand standard”
